A study from Imperial College London has found that the numbers of stillbirths or neonatal deaths in hospital are higher at weekends than on weekdays.

In many cases there is nothing that can be done to prevent stillbirths or neonatal deaths occurring, however this report demonstrates that more can be done to improve outcomes for mothers and babies. The study suggests that if performance was consistent across the week then 770 deaths and 470 maternal infections per year could be avoided.

It is to be hoped that the results of this study will lead to heightened awareness and changes in clinical practice.
